In May 2016, the leaders of the active communities started having regular meet-ups with the goal to make further impact on the tech and developer ecosystem in the country through collaboration.
The meetup was sponsored by Microsoft, initiated by John Paul Sibug, its former Audience and Platform Evangelism Manager of the Philippines Region while RSVPs of the different tech community leaders were managed by Haifa Carina Baluyos, former Executive Director of Developers Connect (DevCon).
In the meetings, three (3) Major Goals for 2016 were identified and agreed upon by the leaders:
- Host monthly community meetups
- Create and maintain one community calendar
- Increase collaborative initiatives
As of this writing, all of the goals were achieved. Below are the Highlights of this year:
Hosted Monthly Community Leads Meetups
Since the first meetup, community leaders would meet every month to share and learn from their own experiences in building and growing tech communities. Among the topics were on getting sponsorships, tools their communities use, and organizing big events. Some of the hosts were Google Philippines, Microsoft Philippines, Mozilla Philippines, Penbrothers, VentureSpace, and NuWorks.
One Community Calendar
Leaders of the different tech communities now share access to a consolidated community calendar to sync, especially on planning the dates of activities and avoid conflict with other communities. Furthermore, the calendar was made and promoted publicly so members of the tech communities can stay updated with the upcoming events.
Increased Collaborative Initiatives
One of the first major collaborative project led by the tech communities was the TECH Caravan in Baguio City, which was consequently followed by Dagupan, Zamboanga and Bataan.
